The perfect adults-only vacation

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a fan of family vacays and multi-generational getaways, and I appreciate an all-inclusive family resort. But sometimes, I just want to know that every pool on my vacation will be an adult-only pool. And after being a full-time travel writer for more than two decades, I’ve found that for a vacation that’s all of the fun and none of the stress, adults-only all-inclusive resorts are hard to beat. You simply choose your destination, pick a room and the rest—from activities to food, and even tipping at many properties—is taken care of. You can leave your wallet in the safe and simply dive into vacation bliss without a worry. Depending on the destination you choose, you’ll find the ideal romantic retreat, a great girlfriends getaway or a solo vacation, all sans kids—yours or anyone else’s. With this option, every pool is guaranteed to be the adult pool, and meals and entertainment options are more “grown-up.”

How we chose our top adults-only all-inclusive resorts

To help you narrow down the extensive adults-only all-inclusive options—which include some of our favorite all-inclusive resorts in the U.S., the Caribbean and Mexico—we consulted with travel experts who spend their careers finding the best vacation getaways. Then we double-checked their suggestions with user reviews and star ratings on Tripadvisor to make sure consumers agreed that these were indeed great spots with equally impressive activities, entertainment and food. And finally, we highlighted the best in each category, to make it easy for you to find the best all-inclusive resort for your adults-only vacation.

Playa del Carmen sign

Best adults-only resort for upscale service

Impression Moxche by Secrets, Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Do you have a butler at home? How about maid service three times a day? How about your minibar filled twice a day (for free!)? Nope, I don’t have any of those either. And those are just some of the ways Impression Moxche by Secrets, an upscale, adults-only resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, sets itself apart. With 198 spacious suites—many featuring private plunge pools or swim-out access—the property is designed for a total relaxation vacation, with ultra-personalized service in an elevated environment.

When you’re not enjoying all the attentive service in your suite, you can lounge on the white sands, swim and play in the ocean (non-motorized water sports are included) or lounge by the rooftop pool before heading to a gourmet meal at one of the two exclusive restaurants on the property. Staying at Impression also gives you total access to all the amenities at the neighboring Secrets resort, including nearly a dozen restaurants and bars (however, regular guests are not welcome at Impression).

Casa Velas, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Designed to evoke a secluded Spanish hacienda, this hotel features 80 spacious suites, some with private pools and Jacuzzis, all nestled on the greens of Marina Vallarta’s 18-hole golf course. Although it’s not located right on the ocean, Casa Velas’s guests have complimentary beach access to Táu Beach Club just five minutes away (by private shuttle), complete with pool concierge service, loungers and chairside service—as well as all-inclusive tropical cocktails and all-day sushi. Here, guests have the best of a small intimate property with all the amenities of a large resort, since they can also visit nearby Grand Velas to try out gym classes or dine at other restaurants, although TripAdvisor reviewers rave about the on-site Emiliano restaurant.

The other things reviewers can’t say enough about in their five-star reviews: the staff, who are “friendly,” “helpful” and “incredible.” On the property, you’ll also find the ABJA Spa, which offers treatment rooms for singles and couples, a hydrotherapy area, a fitness center and a beauty salon.

Pros:

  • Private beach-club access with all amenities included
  • LifeFitness Center Access

Con:

Best adults-only New England spa getaway

Miraval Berkshires Resort & Spa, Lenox, MA

Launched in 2020, Miraval Berkshires Resort & Spa is one of the newest adults-only, all-inclusives in the U.S., but that doesn’t mean it’s a total new kid on the block. Miraval has a long reputation of creating memorable wellness getaways in locations in Arizona and Texas, and it brings that experience to this picturesque New England setting. The resort’s beautifully landscaped grounds, set within 380 protected acres, provides a scenic Berkshires backdrop for everything from standard activities, like hiking, to unusual options, like equine meditation. Other unique classes include clairvoyant readings, Tibetan singing bowls and a vibrational sound chamber. • Unique classes
  • Full-service spa and treatments
  • No phones policy (although this can be a con for some folks)

Cons:

  • Winters in New England require bundling up

Club Med Turkoise, Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

Sometimes a spot seems a little too good to be true, but then you realize it’s actually everything you hoped it would be and more. Take, for instance, Club Med Turkoise, which sits on pristine Grace Bay, a bucket-list-worthy beach on a stretch of water considered to be one of the top diving and snorkeling spots in the world. Best adults-only resort in the Northeast

The Lodge at Woodloch, Hawley, Pennsylvania

You might be surprised to discover that there’s a luxe, adults-only all-inclusive resort less than two hours from Philadelphia and New York City. The stunning setting for this award-winning destination spa may be easy to reach, but the 500 pristine wooded acres (home to a 15-acre private lake) in under-the-radar northwest Pennsylvania feels a world away from city life. And the plus-size rooms, gourmet dining options and wide range of activities seal the deal.

The Lodge embraces a philosophy of personal awakening, and it offers more than 35 daily classes touching on everything from the expected (yoga and hiking) to the more meditative (watercolor painting and cooking) to the downright adrenaline-pumping (fire making and hatchet throwing). It’s the perfect location for a girlfriend’s getaway, especially since everything from the art classes to artisanal cheeses is included (yes, there are local cheeses, filet mignon and even chocolate desserts on the menu!). I recently visited for my mom’s 80th birthday with my three sisters, and we all had a blast trying everything from pole dancing in the pool to creating our own stationery. Seasonal features include summer lake activities such as kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and fishing, as well as chef-led garden dinners, with an option for sommelier wine pairings for a small extra charge. After your activities of choice, make sure to head to the spa, indoor pool and hot tubs for some well-deserved relaxation.
